In Dealey Plaza, John Russo deals with horror- only this time around he takes his horrifying cues from real news headlines., April 20, 2014, By Russ Streiner
This review is from: Dealey Plaza (Paperback)
With a sharp mid-career adjustment, John A. Russo shifted his storytelling focus from flesh-eating ghouls and zombies, to a totally different kind of horror- the horror of violence in America. The kind of terrifying horror we Americans inflict, mostly, upon ourselves with our suspicions, hatred, extremism and general madness.
In crafting his latest novel, Dealey Plaza, Russo utilizes his observations of contemporary history to create a spreadsheet of real and fictional historical violence starting with the time-stopping assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and spanning 40-years to the Al-Qaeda attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.
In Dealey Plaza, John Russo has used real events and media coverage of those events as the sketch pad to create fictional events that his characters have to live and die with.
The characters and details are crisp and clear and the violence, horror and terror they deal with in Russo’s fictional settings are, unfortunately, reinforced by news headlines to this very day.
In Dealey Plaza, Russo holds up a mirror to contemporary society that we don’t really like to look into. Dealey Plaza reflects what is regrettably within striking distance of all of us, at any place, at any time. As a filmmaker myself, Dealey Plaza could be made into a stunning benchmark film.
